What
is a domain name?
A domain name
is your address on the world wide web. It makes it easier for
people to find you and remember where your site is for next time.
Behind the
scenes, the Internet actually uses "IP addresses" to
direct Internet "traffic". IP addresses are a series
of 4 numbers separated by dots (e.g. 123.126.65.123). Since such
numbers are difficult to remember, Domain Names are used to represent
the numbers and make the Internet easier to use.
A domain name
always takes the form <nameyouchoose>.<domain>. The
domain is the group to which your name belongs (e.g. ".com", ".co.uk", ".uk.com", ".uk.co" etc.).
People will
view your web site at www.<nameyouchoose>.<domain> and
they will send email to you at <whateveryouwant>@<nameyouchoose>.<domain>
Who
owns my domain name?
Domain names are sold on a lease basis. While you are leasing the
domain name you can do what you want with it. For example you can
use it to point to a web site, use it as an email address or sell
it to someone else.
At the Domain Name Shop all domain names we register are registered
in the customer's name. This means that for the duration of the
registration period YOU are the legal owner of the domain name.
When the lease is due for renewal you will have to pay the same
registration fee again. If you do not renew the lease then the
domain name becomes free for another person to register.
Do
I get a certificate?
Whether you receive a certificate or not depends on the type
of name you are registering. Most domain name registries (e.g.
InterNIC) do not issue certificates.
The main exception is Nominet who oversee all .UK domain names.
For every .UK domain name you register Nominet will send you
an official certificate of registration and a confirmation form
for you to check, sign and return to Nominet. This certificate
is send direct to you as the owner of the domain name about 5-6
months after initial registration (note that this time period
may vary).
Can
I cancel a registration?
Normally domain registrations cannot be cancelled, however if
you let us know within 5 calendar days of your original order
we will do our best to help.
Should
I go for a .com or .co.uk domain name?
Try and think where your market lies. For example if you want
to sell your products and services to customers all over the
world, go for a .com name which is International. If you only
want to sell to customers in the UK then a .co.uk name will be
best.
If you're ever going to go International you should really register
both to help safeguard your trade name
How
long does a name take to register?
Wherever possible we will perform registrations as soon as your order is submitted
online (see note about cheque payments below). However some domain names do
require manual processing and these will normally be processed within 24 hours.
For orders paid for by credit card, automated registrations* take
place immediately. For orders paid for by cheque, registration
occurs when we receive your payment.
It is important to note that registered domain names may appear
to be available for up to 48 hours after registration occurs. This
is because the "WHOIS" databases - i.e. the computers
which tell you if a domain name is free or not - are generally
only updated once every 24 hours.
*note that automated registration only applies to the following
domain names:
.com, .net, .org, .co.uk, .org.uk, .uk.co, .uk.com, .uk.net, .gb.com,
.gb.net, .eu.com, .us.com, .br.com, .cn.com, .hu.com, .no.com,
.qc.com, .ru.com, .sa.com, .se.com, .se.net, .uy.com, .za.com
What
if the name I want isn't available?
Don't be put off. There are lots to choose from.
If you want an International name, try using ".net", ".org" or ".cc" instead
of ".com". In the UK there are loads of alternatives
to choose from - ".uk.com", ".gb.com", ".uk.co", ".uk.net" and ".gb.net".
If you still can't find the name you want call us and we'll be
happy to suggest some for you.
Will
you remind me to renew my domain name?
Renewal notices are sent out automatically by email to all customers with
a valid email address. Such notices go out 120 days in advance and are
then sent every 20 days up to the renewal date. You can also check the renewal
status of your domain names and services via the control panel.
Please make sure you let us know if your
email address changes as we need an up-to-date email address to
be able to send you your
renewal notifications.
Although we will do our best to contact you about your
upcoming renewals, the ultimately responsible for making sure that
your domain names and services
are renewed
in time is yours.
Why
do I need a domain name?
A domain name is important for several reasons:
It looks more professional to have your web site at www.<yourname>.com
or www.<yourname>.co.uk than www.othercompany.com/<yourname> or <yourname>.othercompany.co.uk
etc.
People will find it easier to remember when they want to find your site
again. If they spend time looking for it elsewhere they may never get back
to your site.
You are protecting your name from being abused by someone else. Anyone can
register your name, you then face a possible legal battle to get it back.
Do
I need web or email forwarding?
Web forwarding allows you to use your domain name with any web space. For
example if you already have a web site at "www.myfreespace.co.uk/~myusername/indexpage.html" you
may decide you want the name "www.pigeons.co.uk" to take people to "www.myfreespace.co.uk/~myusername/indexpage.html".
This is web forwarding.
Email forwarding allows people to send you email at one address whilst you
receive it at another address. For example if you have a site "www.pigeons.co.uk" but
you want all the email for this site to go to "myname@webmail.com" then
we can arrange for people to continue sending email to "yourname@pigeons.co.uk" and
you can read it at "myname@webmail.com". This is email forwarding.
If your site has it's own unique IP address (ask your web hosting company)
or your hosting company is happy to allow you to use your domain name with
your web space and email then you do not need web and email forwarding.
Can
I register a domain name in another country?
Yes, subject to the same limitations about company names and
brand names. We will be happy to register any name anywhere.
Please call us or email
us with your requirements.
Can
I register a brand-name?
If it is your brand-name then yes. However it is your responsibility to make
sure that you do not infringe on the rights of any other company or individual.
If you do register a brand-name or company name as a domain name
which belongs to another company, we reserve the right to cancel
the registration. Furthermore you will be liable for any costs incurred
as a result of the registration.
Do
I need web hosting?
You only need web hosting if you want to have a web site. Alternatively
you can use your domain name for email only or simply have us "park" the
name on our servers for use in the future.
I
want a web site, do I have to use your web hosting?
No, you are free to use any web hosting you wish. We do not charge for transfers*
and we will always be happy to help whether you are using our server or not.
Naturally, we will always be happy to provide web hosting services
if required. We can also provide Internet access, email, web site
design and software consultancy services with over 7 years experience
in the field.
*Please note that some foreign domains do incur a transfer fee
at the top-level. In such cases this cost will be passed onto the
customer.
How
much hosting space do I need?
A rule of thumb is 10Mb package is ideal for businesses which want to take
advantage of having an online presence but will not be requiring eCommerce
or database driven sites. The 10Mb account is often used by people who want
to have a personal web site which has a few photographs, flash animations and
graphics.
30Mb packages are suitable for businesses which wish to have an
online presence and will be using eCommerce functionality (Shopping
Baskets) within the site. These accounts also have free web
statistics and five
separate email accounts. These types of account are useful for
larger personal sites with online photo albums, or sites with a
lot of content.
100Mb hosting packages are generally for businesses who have large
corporate web sites that use eCommerce, and have database technology
at the back end. These types of accounts come with free web statistics
and 10 separate email accounts.
Windows
or Linux hosting?
When we refer to Windows or Linux we are actually referring
to the operating system being run on the server. It has nothing
to do with what operating system you are using to view or create
the web site.
We recommend any one who is writing a web site
that uses any kind
of Windows
technology
such as
ASP,
ODBC
or FrontPage
Extensions
should opt for Windows hosting. Windows servers come with
the software to support these kinds of technologies.
Web sites written with other web design packages such as Macromedia
Dreamweaver, or Adobe GoLive to name just a couple are better suited
to Linux servers.
Can
I buy extra web or email space?
Yes, you can increase your web and/or email quota at any time by upgrading
to a larger account. A member of our sales team will be happy to assist you
with this.
Why
do I get a "forbidden" message on my web site?
A "forbidden" message is displayed in the web browser when
there is no home page uploaded. The "forbidden" means that listing
the files on the site is
"forbidden" to general Internet users.
If you have uploaded your home
page but still get this message then make sure your home page filename is correct
(remember Linux filenames are case-sensitive):
For Linux: index.htm, index.html
or index.php (PHP only)
For Windows: index.htm, default.htm, index.html, default.html or default.asp
(ASP only)
